Toad for MySQL and the Amazon Aurora Preview – Setup and Config Amazon Aurora , the MySQL compatible RDBMS is currently in ‘Preview’ for selected customers.  Once it is released it will become the 5 th RDBMS (MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server and PostgreSQL) offered on Amazon RDS.  I joined the Preview program in hopes of trying to connect via Toad for MySQL.  I was not disappointed as the configuration was fairly straightforward and both Toad for MySQL as well as Spotlight on MySQL were able to connect and behave as expected. That said, the Amazon Aurora interface at this early point seems to be…how shall we say… unpredictable fluid, so I’ve made some notes below on how to configure Amazon Aurora and make it publicly accessible.  Basically, if you walk through these steps you’ll be able to install Toad for MySQL and Spotlight on MySQL on your desktop, and then access a running instance of Amazon Aurora Preview. So, on to the disclaimer….given the fluid nature of the Preview, the following steps may not be complete, but I’m confident that they are on point enough to help you past any gotchas that I encountered.  If you observe any new behavior, please post up below.  I’ll update the document as needed, and then provide a final draft with exact, step by step instructions once Aurora goes public. So treat these steps and observations as proof that Toad supports the Preview release of Amazon Aurora.  If you’re like me, it’s good to know outcomes before devoting an uncertain amount of time to a science project, enjoy. Of course, if you haven’t already, download Toad for MySQL and Spotlight on MySQL Now fire up an Aurora DB instance I don’t know anything about your environment, but you may have to ‘Create a new VPC’ and DB Subnet Group.  Screenshots below, just roll with it and take the defaults. For publicly accessible, you need to enable the following settings on your VPC: BIG Gotcha here, make sure your image is publicly accessible (choose Yes) It takes a few minutes for the db instance to be created The Cluster Endpoint field is the actual host name that you’ll enter in the connection properties of Toad for MySQL and Spotlight Potentially optional – I edited the Security Group to allow any connection.  Its wide open now, will definitely lock it down later, but my goal this time was to just get it up and running, security be darned. Now connect via Toad for MySQL and Spotlight For Toad for MySQL, click File | New | Connection and enter the ‘Cluster Endpoint’ name that Amazon Aurora generated when creating the instance Now for Spotlight, pretty much the same process, select File | Connect then Spotlight on MySQL | Add new connection. Now enter your 'Cluster Endpoint’ from Amazon into the Host field and you are on your way   And Profit!  Heres Toad for MySQLconnected to Aurora! ...and heres Spotlight on MySQL connected to Aurora
