Amazon Aurora is now GA. If you aren’t familiar, Amazon says it best here: ‘ Amazon Aurora is a fully managed, MySQL-compatible, relational database engine that combines the speed and reliability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open-source databases. It delivers up to five times the performance of MySQL without requiring changes to most of your existing applications.’ As far as I’m concerned, the value for end users is that if you are hedging against vendor lock-in i.e. you want to run non mission critical database applications on a non-Oracle platform (instead of Oracle/MySQL), Amazon Aurora is an intriguing option. Of course, whether you choose Oracle, MySQL or Amazon Aurora, Dell Software is able to help. With Toad for MySQL, users regardless of skill level are able to execute more quickly on commodity database tasks while also benefiting from innovative Toad specific features that enhance and enlighten the work of DBAs and Developers. That said, I can get you up and running on Amazon Aurora and connected to it with Toad for MySQL in less than 10 minutes. Here is the run-through…(NOTE: Click on inline images below to embiggen) Go to https://us-west-2.console.aws.amazon.com or equivalent for your region, create an AWS account, and then ‘Launch an Aurora DB Instance’ Add DB Instance Name/Username/Password You can create a new Security Group that exposes your new Aurora instance to only your current ip address (which is what I did) or configure broader access for multiple users, your call. I’d go with the default right now, you can always add ip addresses/ranges later, and remember, we’re trying to do this in less than 10 minutes…don’t slow down now! Now we wait for the Aurora instance to become available…Maybe this is a good time to download and install Toad for MySQL…Download Toad for MySQL and install it https://www.toadworld.com/m/freeware/1469 Now, the Aurora instance should be up, when it is, highlighted below is the actual ‘Host’ value that will be used to connect Toad for MySQL to Aurora, copy it (minus the port information ‘:3306’) for the next step In Toad choose File | New | Connection and paste the Host information into the Host: field like so Connect and profit!
